Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
The Gospel this weekend beautifully portrays Jesus as the Good Shepherd who is ever-loving, compassionate, and selflessly devoted to his flock. He embodies unwavering care and readiness to lay down his life for his sheep, offering them trust, tranquility, and joy. His guidance shields them from life's trials and tribulations, ensuring their safety and well-being. Beyond His immediate flock, Jesus extends His nurturing embrace to all, transcending boundaries and caring for sheep from every fold. His sacrificial love amplifies His power, exemplifying the profound impact of His resurrection and a heartbeat of hope pulsating through every soul.
The imagery of the Good Shepherd illuminates three vital responsibilities incumbent upon us likened to sheep within the fold. These duties are not merely obligatory; they are the essence of a profound and unwavering commitment as we must remain in trust, submission, and cooperation with our divine caretaker. Firstly, we are called to cultivate an intimate relationship with God, recognizing His sovereign role as our Shepherd who is constantly guiding, protecting, and blessing us. This relationship transcends mere duty of a hired man. It is rooted in unconditional love, full commitment, and sincere trust. Therefore, we must attune our ears to His voice, heed His teachings, obey His commands, and faithfully shadow Him in our daily life.
The second task encompasses our relationships with our fellow flock members, united under the guidance of the Good Shepherd toward the pastures of joy. Therefore, like the sheep in the flock remain undivided and protect each other from the threat of predators, we must stand united and unwaveringly support one another. In other words, instead of succumbing to envy or discord, we must team with others in collaboration, compassion, and solidarity on our journey of faith with many trials and tribulations. By fostering such unity, we fortify ourselves against external distractions, enabling us to listen more clearly to the voice of the Shepherd, to better fulfill His commands, and follow Him more steadfastly.
Lastly, we bear a sacred duty towards those who may not share our Catholic faith, particularly since our Good Shepherd loves to extend His grace to all, whether within or outside His fold. We are called to spread His boundless love, His compassionate forgiveness, and His Good News to the whole world. United in our rebirth through God, we must envision a future where there is but one flock under one shepherd (John 10:16).
Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ and Our Lady of La Vang!
Reverend Kiet Anh Ta.
